Theatre-making is a collaborative practice.
It asks us to listen closely. To notice what's happening. To take risks. To be curious. To make offers and build on other people's ideas. To trust the ensemble. To be comfortable in the unknown.
And often, simply, to play.
Across eight workshops we'll explore improvisation, ensemble and devising. We'll develop the skills and instincts that help.
There isn't a finished show we're working towards. There isn't an audition.
We're here to experiment, make things, try things that don't work, discover things that do, and get better at the practice of making theatre. Together.
IMPROVISATION - We'll work with spontaneity, listening, offers, presence, play and the ability to respond to what is actually happening - rather than what you expected to happen.
ENSEMBLE - We'll build ensemble in our group through groupwork principles, physical and spatial awareness, story, and the particular kind of listening that allows an ensemble to create together.
STORY - We'll see how narrative deepens connection, and explore how many different forms it can take.
DEVISING - We'll generate material, follow ideas, make creative choices, shape and transform the unexpected into something worth sharing.
MAKING - Every session will be practical. We'll be on our feet, working with each other, experimenting and creating. We won't have an end in mind, but every avenue will be mined.
You might:
have recently graduated from drama school
be making independent theatre
work primarily as an actor but want more experience devising
be a director, writer or performance-maker wanting to strengthen your ensemble practice
have been away from theatre for a while and want to get back in the room
simply love making theatre and want to get even better at it
You don't need to be anything other than curious, generous, willing to experiment and interested in making theatre with other people.
I'm putting together the first cohort and looking for around 12 actors, performers and theatre-makers who'd like to spend eight weeks exploring improvisation, ensemble and devising.
If this sounds like something you'd like to be part of, express your interest below.
No audition. No commitment. Submitting an expression of interest doesn't commit you to anything.
Once I've got a sense of numbers and availability, I'll contact everyone with proposed dates, location and next steps.
I've spent much of my working life in ensembles.
I've been an ensemble member of Melbourne Playback Theatre Company since 2005, working as a performer and facilitator within a practice built around improvisation, storytelling, deep listening and community-focussed theatre.
I've also been a long-term ensemble member of Rawcus Theatre Company (since 2008) - creating new work through collective experimentation, improvisation and devising with a group of diverse minds, bodies and imaginations.
These experiences have shaped the way I think about theatre.
They've shaped what I understand about collaboration and long-term creative relationships.
I've learnt a lot from other theatre practitioners. I've learnt;
some of the most exciting work happens when nobody in the room has all the answers.
a good ensemble can make you braver and making theatre is good for me.
improvisation is often misunderstood. It's not about being funny or spontaneous - it's about attention, generosity, responsiveness and trust.
devising is way more than making a show... it's a way of reflecting deeply with other souls.
It's time to pay it forward.
Alongside my theatre practice, I've spent many years working as a facilitator and learning designer, designing and leading experiential workshops with performers, students, community groups and organisations.
This project brings those worlds together.
I'm passionate about creating a space for us to be our most creative, courageous, generous selves.
A room where we can learn through doing, take our practice seriously without taking ourselves too seriously, and discover what is possible when we make theatre, together.
8 workshops of 2.5 hours each
12 participants
$200 for the full eight-week program
No audition
I'm deliberately not locking in the venue or timetable yet. I'd like to hear from people who are interested first, then find a time and location that works for the group.
Proposed Location: Melbourne's north, in a venue close to public transport.
Dates & time: To be confirmed.
(This could be a weeknight, a weekday morning, a weekend. It could be weekly sessions, or a week-long intensive. )
This could start as soon as November 2026, or early in 2027
You don't need to know exactly what you're looking for.
Maybe you've been acting for years but haven't had much opportunity to devise.
Maybe you've just left drama school and want to keep making things.
Maybe you've been away from theatre and miss being in a room with other performers.
Or maybe you just want to spend eight sessions playing, experimenting and learning with a group of other people who are up for it.
Come into "The Ensemble Space". Let's see what we can find.
